If you love to delve into the Uniting Church’s 2015 regulations, you may be interested to read under Ministry, 2.2.1 Definitions and Scope of Specified Ministries, that duties of a minister includes (xii) ‘pioneering new expressions of the gospel and encouraging effective ways of fulfilling the mission of the Church‘ (pp. 74,75). See link below
This is one of the reasons that opportunities for Pioneer learning have been developed by the Port Phillip West Presbytery to support people (both within and outside the Presbytery) who are interested in or called to a missional pioneering ministry. This is a ministry that is about exploring new ways to be missional church particularly for people who ‘don’t do church’.
There are two options in 2016:
1. Pioneer Learning Communities (Imagining on the way to experimenting)
These are regional groups for those who have completed Mission Shaped Ministry training, or who have a similar level of mission knowledge and experience, and are starting to explore mission development or fresh expressions of church in their own context.
The purpose of these group is to develop supportive communities who meet to talk about what is happening in mission in their context, to encourage and pray for each other, to discuss emerging issues and think creatively together about next steps. In 2016 there are four groups envisaged, in Geelong, Hoppers Crossing, Sunbury/Macedon Ranges, and Coburg/Pascoe Vale areas.
2. Mission Pioneer School (Experimenting)
For people who are engaged in pioneering ministry – that is, who are actually experimenting with new ways to be in mission, to share the gospel and be church for those who don’t do church.
This group will meet three times a year. Two meetings will be at Hoppers Crossing UC where experienced practitioners who are working in a pioneering ministry will present in the morning, and then be around for conversation, questions and mentoring. The afternoon will provide opportunities for peer mentoring and reflection on mission practice in response to what is happening in mission locally. The third event will be a study tour to South Australia where we will visit some diverse initiatives, and have the opportunity for conversation with practitioners engaged with a range of models of missional church.
Dates for the three 2016 events are March 9, October 19, and Study Tour 26 – 28 May.
